New WordPress Website Orientation
First Week Training
1. Overview of the Structure – 2 minutes
The most important idea from this tutorial is that each page on your website should be about 1 topic. Do not mix topics across pages. When you add a new page, say to yourself…”This page is about _______________”. You should be able to fill in the blank clearly and precisely WITHOUT using the word “and”. An “and” is a clear sign that the page is about more than 1 main idea.
2. Content vs Presentation – 5 minutes
The visual display of your website (colors, fonts, layout) is 100% separate from the text content of your website. Each website as a master theme and a global style sheet that determines how the website looks. Themes and stylesheets are very powerful and you should not attempt to modify theme unless you know what you are doing and make a backup first.
Try to avoid any formatting within the visual editor of each page since this will cause that 1 page to look different from all the others.
3. Logging in
You will be given an administrator login for your website. PracticeLight also has a separate administrator login. If you ever stop working with us, you will be able to delete our Admin login and retain only your own.
Log into your website by placing /wp-admin behind your domain name. For example:
- http://chiropracticwebsitedesigns.com/wp-admin
If you forget your password, use the built in password reset feature.
4. Manual and Automatic Backups – 2 Minutes
Your website runs a full back-up once per week and saves the file in your hosting account. It is a good idea to run a manual backup and save the zip file anytime you are planning to make changes to the website.
5. Fixing Typos and Other Small Text Changes – 3 minutes
To make small text changes on the website you’ll need to find the text in the Pages or the Posts menu. Then use the Visual editor tab to make your text change. Be sure to click the Update button to save your change.
6. Adding a Blog Post – 6 minutes
Use the “Add New” button to add a new blog post. At a minimum you must fill in the Title, Body and assign 1 Category. Optional, but highly recommended, are filling in the tags, SEO meta data and assigning an image.
Second Week of Training
More videos coming soon on widgets, layouts and menus. Before you proceed, use what you’ve learned to add your own first blog post.
